About the Book

LettersCover

I have long wanted writing on the wall. For God to write in big scrawly letters what He would have me be and do for Him as His artist child. To be sure, He has written to me/us in his Holy Word. I am not in any way, by writing these letters, attempting to add to or redefine what is contained in the completely sufficient words of God in the Bible. All that I’m trying to do is to “preach the gospel of Christ to myself” as pertains specifically to being an artist. Though I do not in any way presume to put words in the mouth of Christ, I do hear His voice guiding me while I struggle to make sense of my callings as an artist, teacher, wife, and mother. It has not been easy. I do not have all the answers.

What I do have to offer is a 16+ year journey. This journey of being an artist in and around the very full life of a mom, pastor’s wife, and teacher, has been chronicled in scads of written journals as well as drawn journal/sketchbooks. If the struggles I write about in these journals could be viewed as an image, they would look like a slinky: spiral after spiral of coming back to the same struggles with my art calling, over and over and over. On February 1st, 2013, I began to write down how I would imagine my Heavenly Father speaking (or writing) to me as His artist child.

I write these letters for my own sake. So that I myself can return to them as I spiral around again to the topics the letters explore. I had originally intended these to be written and posted daily. But my Father has a way of redirecting through circumstances and now they are written as I am able, as my life allows space, or desperation, for them.

I also write these letters from my own humble perspective. I do not offer them as capital T truth for all persons in all walks of life and artistic journeys. They are born out of my own experience, however limited, faulty and incomplete that experience may be.

But I also write them for you. Whether you are a person of faith or not, my hope is that you find these letters an encouragement on your own path of understanding how to be the artist you are, in and around your life. I welcome your comments, and would love to hear from you.

The first 75 letters are now published in a book and so the posts have been deleted. But I will be writing more letters along the way. And when there are enough for another book, I’ll compile them as well.  Please follow this blog for posts and future notices!

It is my daily delight, as well as something I have to remind myself of, to know that because of Christ, I hear Him say:

“You are my beloved child, in whom I am well pleased!”

*****

“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us,

that we should be called children of God!

And that is what we are!”

  1. This is fantastic. I have been a woman of faith for 40 years but an artist for only 4. I long to hear how the Father will speak to me through your words. Thank you for this.

  2. A friend posted this link because she liked it so much and when I came to check it out, was really impressed. I nominated you for Very Inspiring Blogger Award. Your blog topics and theme take a different look than mine, but I too have a strong faith. Here’s to much success inspiring so many as you already have. Happy writing!

    • Thank you so very much!! I really appreciate this! I tried to visit your blog to get details about the award, but it is marked private. That’s totally fine…I do appreciate the gesture!

  3. It’s been so gratifying to find so many artists and photographers out here on WP who are Christians. Man, what a nice puddle I’ve fallen into here. Truly a blessed thing. (I’ll go back to work now, I promise, but just had to come in here and say!) ❤
